Tribute to Gregory Thomas Saucedo [Sep 11, 2020|14:50]
[Disposition | thoughtful]

(This tribute is part of the 2,996 project. It is future-dated so it can appear first in my recent entries (where people clicking from the 2,996 project will look) and posted early as the project suggested. Also, all comments are unscreened, so non-LJers can respond freely.)

Greg was one of 343 firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center after it, as we now well know, was deliberately attacked. He had a remarkable sense of humor. According to a friend, he said that he was the model they used for the Atlas statue in Rockefeller Center. At that time, it was likely to be a purely sarcastic comment. But when he responded to the call, Greg ultimately gave his own life in order to save hundreds, perhaps thousands, of others. He carried their world on his shoulders, and this world is thankful for the work he's done, both at the WTC and at other places he was called throughout his career.

EDIT: Photo updated 9-10-08. Uploaded to my Photobucket account, so hopefully it doesn't break.

Fort-to-Port meet notes [Nov 8, 2009|11:02]

My set of pics from the meet have been uploaded.

It turned out to be wonderful weather-wise. There were eight of us total who took a spin on a stretch of US-24 that opened only nine days ago. We then ventured back via the old road to take SR 101 north to Scipio Road, which, despite the "fresh country air" as my dad likes to call it, took us to the Spencerville Covered Bridge. Going back by SR 1 back towards Fort Wayne, we saw the Dupont Road expansion project near the expanding Parkview North medical campus.

After a brief respite at Culver's, we then proceeded down I-69 to the Airport Expressway, then took Paulding to Lafayette (US 27) and followed that downtown. We followed the 1915 routing of the Lincoln Highway out of downtown and then followed US-33 up to an old bridge over the Eel River. After that, we backtracked back to SR 930, which we followed back to the restaurant, where we parted ways.

Those keeping track of the spread of Clearview may want to know that the Fort-to-Port section didn't have any, which we surmise was because the contract was let before ODOT's adoption of Clearview. The interchanges are numbered, and we found OH 127 shields on a couple of the advance BGSes. (Dan will have to provide photos of those, as I only noticed one before I could get my camera ready.) We had a great time as always.

Where does the time go? [Nov 2, 2009|19:40]

It’s a little hard to believe November has rolled around. So much has gone on this year that it’s hard to keep track of it all. I’m sure it won’t let up, either, as the days leading to Christmas are always busy. As always, I’m thinking of what I can buy for people, but it seems every year that the holiday season becomes less and less exciting.

This Saturday marks another road meet. It’s a lot like the other meets I’ve been to this year, except I’ll be the one hosting. We’re planning to look at some of the Fort-to-Port project, including driving the portion which opened October 29. Then I’m planning to see some of the things closer to Fort Wayne proper. We usually have a great time discussing roads or really anything else which comes to mind.

I’m really digging Windows 7. I had pre-ordered the upgrade back in July so I could get it at a $50 price point, and so far it’s living up to some of the hype. I had no trouble at all with a clean install, and most of my applications load a little bit quicker than what they did with Vista, which I never felt was that bad (of course, I had gotten my laptop with Vista’s Service Pack 1 preinstalled). There may be a couple more programs I want to install, but I’m liking Windows Live Writer to make my LJ posts. (And I just realized the text editor shows my journal’s style. That’s just too damn cool!)

Something else I’m really digging is my high school football team’s first-ever playoff run. Despite the wind and the rain this past game, Bronson was able to hold on and beat a physical Addison team. They host Michigan Center this Friday night, and I’m expecting them to roll on to the regional. As I told the coach (one of my old teachers for what it’s worth), I’ll try to make as many games all the way to Ford Field. I suppose this run gives me a reason for some excitement.

2009 color tour day 1: Home to Mackinaw City, MI [Oct 9, 2009|21:25]
[Tags|]
[Disposition | relaxed]

For the second time in as many years, I'm taking a fall color tour through the U.P. This time, however, I intend to finally get the two western U.P. counties to finish off my native state. I also intend to hit a couple places I missed last year.

The route today:

M-66 north (you don't need to know how I got to 66 :p)
M-21 east (to not be stuck behind a manufactured house)
BUS US-127 (St. Johns) north
US-127 north
BUS- US-127 (St. Louis) north
M-46 east
Meridian Rd north (gains M-30, which I clinched in one fell swoop, at M-20)
M-55 east
M-65 north
Kokosing Rd west
South Branch Rd north (becomes Curtisville Rd in Alcona County)
Bamfield Rd west (becomes Curtisville Rd in Oscoda County, designated as Oscoda County 604 mostly)
M-33 north (including M-72 and F32 triplex)
M-32 east with a brief stop in Hillman to clinch BUS M-32
2nd Ave through Alpena's Old Town
Wessel Rd north
Hamilton Rd west
US-23 north
Huron St north to the motel

*It rained pretty much from home until I got into Oscoda County, so obviously no pictures until that point.
*Meridian Road from M-46 north has quite a bit of traffic. I'll also note that M-30 is now signed from M-20, and the new bridge over the Tittabawassee in Sanford looks quite impressive.
*Was rather surprised to see M-55's intersections with M-33 and M-65 both signalized. I guess traffic warrants them.
*It was interesting to see CR 604 marked along Curtisville Rd in Oscoda County using the black-on-white squares. This road also had a couple paved sections between dirt sections. But then I saw CR 604 signed with the standard blue pentagons west of Au Sable Valley River Rd, and there was an eastbound reassurance marker on that road. From there to M-33, CR-604 was in excellent condition.
*There were a couple C32 markers where F32 markers should have been the first couple miles north of Mio.
*The State Highway Department (sic) garage in Hillman still lists Murray Van Wagoner as State Highway Commissioner (sic).
*It looks as though the camelback in Hillman is getting bypassed. Hopefully, the camelback there gets preserved as one did in Mottville.
*A repaving job on US-23 heading west out of Cheboygan was ongoing.
*In a few minutes, I'll see that the Mackinac Bridge still looks wonderful at night.
*With this jaunt, I now have all of the L.P. counties clinched. I'll have the whole state on Sunday.

I guess I'll update LJ land on what's happening [Sep 15, 2009|17:29]
I don't get around to updating LJ quite as much anymore, since most of what I'd write sticks to within 140 characters (@rawmustard if you really feel a need to follow me there). But this summer has been busy to say the least, and I plan to keep occupied during my favorite season of. Motel rooms are booked for the Columbus Day roadtrip I plan to take—another color tour of the U.P., but this time I'm planning to go by way of the northeastern L.P. and head into Duluth and come back through the Dells. Then on one of the first two Saturdays in November, I plan to host my own roadmeet of sorts to see the opening of a segment of the Fort-to-Port project and tour other road features around Fort Wayne. Plus I'm sure with my birthday, Halloween, and Thanksgiving and the ensuing Christmas shopping season plus some stuff in-between, I think I can keep myself pretty occupied.

After a decade-long wait, the Battle Creek area finally has its own casino. FireKeepers opened back in August, and it certainly has become one of the spots in town. The food options are wonderful, and the atmosphere is terrific and certainly rivals many of the other casinos to which I've been. It's yet to be seen how this will impact the area's economy, however traffic has been steady just about every time I've been. Even my mother liked it the time she went, and that was the first time for her to go to any casino. Oh yeah, if you do go, make sure to get a players card. $4 off the dinner buffet should be reason enough. :p

The Indy meet (7/10-11) [Jul 16, 2009|00:00]
[Tags|]

So we figured it best on Friday for me to be picked up at the Flying J on Indy's south side, rather than have me drive all the way up only to come back down again. I rode in Brian Reynolds's Escort with Sam to start out, while Steve drove Dan and A. J. and H. B. drove himself. We basically took SR 37 down towards Bloomington, stopping in Martinsville for some refreshment. Unfortunately, Steve had taken ill, so he decided to rest a bit in Bloomington before heading back up to his hotel. H. B. gained Dan, while Brian's car took on A. J. From there, we made a quick drive through Indiana University's campus before heading out SR 45 along the general path of I-69's corridor.

Now riding SR 45 through Monroe County has special meaning for me, because it was somewhere along this route that my high school classmate, Sarah Haylett Jones, was killed while in the service of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department directing traffic around an incident. I'm still not certain exactly where she was hit, whether along our route or east of Bloomington, but I thought some of our stretches looked a little like the news photo I saw. I'll have to research it and maybe come through again in order to pay a longer respect. Anyway, after entering Greene County, we did a SR 445 clinch and used SR 54 to get back to SR 45. We then took that to SR 58 and took that west north of the Crane Naval Weapons Support Center.

We then took US 231 (where A.J. couldn't help telling how awful some of its shields looked) down to Loogootee, then catching US 50/150 west to Washington, where we lunched at a Hardee's along the former alignment. After lunch, we then proceeded down SR 57 towards Evansville, doubling back to get to see some of the actual construction of I-69 underway from I-64 to SR 68. The estimated opening date for this segment is July 2010, and I'm sure that's very plausible considering the amount of work that's been done. We then proceeded to Evansville clinching I-164, and then dipped into Kentucky to take a look at the twin cantilever bridges of US 41 over the Ohio. Coming back into Indiana, we proceeded to clinch SR 662 (much shorter since it was decommissioned in Newburgh, and then proceeded out SR 66, where some of the two-lane section was undergoing a twinning. We proceeded to the cable-stayed span of US 231, stopping briefly so we could take more pictures. We then decided to proceed down to US 60 and take that east to Hawesville so we could put a couple more Kentucky counties under our belt.

After crossing at Hawesville, we proceeded up southern SR 237, which the present alignment was newer than what my DeLorme displays. Then it was SR 37 north to I-64, where we missed taking the Frank O'Bannon Highway. Oh well, got to save something for future trips. After taking I-64 east, we stopped for a brief snack at a McDonald's in Corydon, and proceeded to I-265 to get around New Albany, and then took I-65 north to Columbus. (For some reason, H. B. and Dan wanted to clinch SR 265, which I had done previously, so no big loss in missing that.) In Columbus, we took a brief look at the tied-arch SPUI at SR 46 before proceeding back to Indy so I could pick up my car. After driving around Speedway looking for a suitable dining spot, we settled on Donato's, where we ate and A. J. shared some of his albums, which are very impressive. After dropping A. J. and Sam back at their motel, I headed back clockwise around I-465 back to my dad's and called it a night.

Clinches for the day: SR 445, SR 662, southern SR 237, plus Greene, Daviess, Martin, Pike, Gibson, Warrick, Vanderbergh, Spencer, Perry, and Crawford counties in Indiana, with Henderson, Daviess, and Hancock in Kentucky.

Saturday, my dad could come along, and so we first met Brian at the Flying J before proceeding north to the hotel where every other attendee had been staying. This time, Dan drove his rental with A. J. and Steve while I drove Brian and Dad, and H. B. and Sam drove themselves self. This time, we stuck more to the immediate Indy area, first doing an I-865 clinch (Sam peeled off after this), checking out some of the roundabout interchanges in Carmel, driving Shadeland Avenue, checking out the Emerson Avenue SPUI at I-465, then proceeding into downtown via Southeastern Avenue. Because of the scattered rain, we didn't really want to be outside for too long, and after getting to the monument, we lunched at a nearby Qdoba. After that, we then proceeded up to the I-65 interchange northwest of downtown, took I-65 south to I-70 west, took the long way to the Sam Jones Expressway, then checked out the now-former terminal at the airport. Then A. J. and Dan peeled off so they could head home, while Steve joined Dad, Brian, and me for some National Road exploring. H. B. actually headed the same way we did, but of course I don't think he was going to take the time we did.

I can tell you that some of those old alignments and bridges were very impressive. There even were llamas at one of them! We eventually got over to Terre Haute, went through Toad Hop (what people call West Terre Haute), eventually getting back on our route after goin out on what we thought was an old alignment of US 150, then found some old brick alignments of the National Road between I-70 and Marshall, IL. We then proceeded up Rte 1 through Paris, filling up at an unmanned station at US 36. After taking US 36 into Parke County, we explored some of the covered bridges, which really could be a trip in itself, and looked around Rockville for a little bit. Eventually, we made our way back to Indy about 9 p.m. Brian dropped Dad off at his house, while Steve and I went through Southport, ventured out Washington St a little more, where a reconstruction project was taking place east of I-465, came back via I-70 with a stop at a 7-11 on Post Road to finally indulge in free Slurpee. We ventured back downtown, took Michigan Road out, made a brief stop at 86th Street Pub so I could catch the closing laps of the Chicagoland race, and then dropped an exhausted Steve back at his motel. With that, I considered the Indy meet closed, with only the drive back to take the next day, which I will detail in a later entry. This one's long enough as it is.

Clinched for the day: Clinched the Sam Jones Expressway, Clark and Edgar counties in Illinois, and Vermillion in Indiana. We made it a little difficult for me to clinch US 36 in Indiana because of using several old alignments and other Parke County roads, but then I would still need the part east of Pendleton had I taken 36 all the way from Illinois to I-465.

Overall, I had a great time. I was glad to see that my father enjoyed meeting fellow roadgeeks and exploring former alignments. Of course, since he always has plans to travel himself, it's hard to say when he would attend a future roadmeet, but at least he got his first. I now only have a handful of counties left in Indiana (they're a little scattered, but whatever), and I'm planning on clinching them when I make a trip for a family reunion in Terre Haute at the beginning of August.

Notes from my way down to the Indy meet (7/9) [Jul 10, 2009|00:37]
[Tags|]

I got into town a little before nine, after starting a little later than I thought. I basically took U.S. 131 down from Kalamazoo, cut across on the Toll Road (before I-Pass, it would've been 120 or 20), used Elkhart CR 17 to U.S. 20, and then U.S. 31 to Indy. No major delays encountered throughout.

*Expansion joint replacement on U.S. 131 just north of M-216. It looked like grass was growing in the seem between the lanes along this stretch. The portion from just north of U.S. 12 to the state line got a recent overlay.

*The CR 17 bridge over the St. Joe is finally being rebuilt. Elkhart County is calling it the "Six Spans Project." It should be a great improvement once complete.

*I got to see two of the overpasses currently being built over U.S. 31 near Plymouth. The first basically had all its beams and concrete all the way across; the second doesn't quite have the beams all the way across.

I've started a Flickr set at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rawmustard/sets/72157621204721626/ and of course more photos from the next few days will be added there. Nothing new clinched, since I was on roads I've used previously. Obviously, there will be new counties for me tomorrow, since plans are to go all the way to Evansville.

[Disposition | excited]

Tomorrow morning, I'm driving over to Pennsylvania for the weekend. I expect to see quite a bit along the way. Too bad I won't have my laptop with me (HP supposedly has a shipping box on the way so it can be sent in for BIOS repair), but I will have my camera as always. I'll meet a bunch of roadgeeks and take a look at the recently completed portion of I-99 between Bald Eagle and Skytop. The weather is expected to be pleasant for Saturday, but rain is forecast for my drive home Sunday.

Of course, it didn't surprise me that the news outlets couldn't figure just what people were protesting at the tea parties. Yeah, they decreased what is deducted from payroll, but then they went and increased taxes on tobacco! And to think we're a little less than three months into this new administration. Sigh!

I'm now in Milwaukee by way of the western Chicago suburbs. My I-PASS transponder got a good workout as a result, as I clinched I-355 and think I only need I-90 between I-290 and I-190 to clinch I-90 in Illinois. I kinda like the idea of free Wifi in the oases, but with no outlets around that I could see, I wouldn't be surfing long. I actually have to pay at the cafe where I am now, but judging by the number of lappys whipped out, I doubt there are many free ones. Considering this is only my second time in Milwaukee my entire life, it looks like a very decent city. But I'll probably be on my way home before I experience any night life.

I don't believe for one second that Mark Schauer actually knows what's in the package that's likely being signed as I type this. People who are actually gleeful about this crap just won't ever get it. Government needs to be reduced, but now we're seeing just the tip of the iceberg. It'll take years to undo this mess that was rushed down our throats. The 2010 elections can't get here soon enough.

Since practically everyone and his mother on Facebook is doing this, I figure why not? You tag several people, and then they write a note about (or have it imported via RSS, like I do). Anyway, here goes.

1. I was born in Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
2. While I was a Friday's child, my mother, father, and brother were all born on a Wednesday.
3. I've only had permanent residence in three counties which all border one another.
4. For most of my time in Kalamazoo, I lived in the Milwood neighborhood.
5. I used to cry a lot when I was teased.
6. I first went to school when I was two-and-a-half.
7. My side of Howland Avenue was awesome because we had spacious back yards compared to the houses the next street over.
8. I sang in a children's choir at Milwood United Methodist.
9. I'm fascinated with traffic lights, and my fascination is better when the lights are timed properly.
10. I was saddened when the Bilbo's in the Milwood neighborhood closed.
11. We lived in a motel suite temporarily until we could move into an apartment.
12. I used to take Equal in my morning coffee, but now I just drink it black.
13. I enjoy going to South Haven.
14. Although I'm a beer drinker, I also occasionally enjoy wine.
15. I won a school geography bee in the sixth grade, but I did not pass a written test to move on to the state level.
16. The person I beat in said bee's final round was one of my first crushes.
17. I was named for one of my mother's first crushes.
18. I always sign my middle initial (E.) to signify to people that the first part of my double-barrelled last name isn't my middle name.
19. I am a graduate of Bronson High School.
20. The 2008 Kia Sportage I bought recently is the first vehicle I've bought new.
21. I'm a fan of the Muppets.
22. I've only had one person I would consider a girlfriend, and she bailed on me after only two months.
23. The only time I've ever been west of the Mississippi was when I went on my Las Vegas trip last year for my brother's birthday.
24. The only time I've been out of the country was when I went to the Boblo Island amusement park.
25. During the 9/11 attacks, I was working in the call center at the Federal Center.

Monday, I finally got my new set of wheels. The car is a 2008 Kia Sportage. It had only 41 miles on it when I drove it off the lot Monday. I got $4500 in rebates, although the trade-in was a wash. Altogether, it cost just over $18,000; with GAP insurance, the payments come to $354/month at 9% over 66 months. I didn't think it was bad for a new vehicle. Not terrible mileage for a vehicle in that class, either.

We ended up adding both Mom and Greg to the credit app at Seelye-Wright. Hopefully by Monday, I'll have a vehicle. I'm now looking at an 08 Kia Sportage, which gets only a few mpg less than what a compact car might get, but if I'm to pay $300-350 a month, it seems smarter to get a slightly bigger vehicle. Whether the deal actually gets done on Monday or not, I've been told that I would be able to drive something, so no bus on Tuesday regardless.

I do hope that this year goes well for me. I intend to take more roadtrips, and hopefully I'll be bothered to take more pictures. I'm so close to 1,000 on my Flickr stream. There will be plenty of opportunities this year to do both. And, um, I need to update this LJ more, since I don't seem to be doing much of that lately.

Various updates [Nov 29, 2008|09:10]

[Disposition | cynical]

I had Thanksgiving with my mom's side of the family for the first time in years, since usually I'd go to my uncle's on my dad's side or that one time I went to my cousin's place. The meal was good, of course the Lie-downs played as expected (and thus I napped), and I took the rest of Mom's cranberry dish (along with some ham and turkey, which have since been eaten). I had to swing through Coldwater to pick it up since Mom went up to Cadillac for the weekend. I should polish it off sometime next week so I can return the container to her.

Last night, I saw Greensky Bluegrass at Bell's. The band played a great set as they always do, and I couldn't help but dance a bit. And as a long-time aficianado of Bell's beer, that was my first time at the Eccentric Café. I will make it a point to visit there more often. The back room is a terrific venue for live music, and the main taproom looks decent as well. I'm so used to the ubiquity of Bell's offered at all the other bars in the area that I didn't think Bell's own taproom would be a popular hangout, but it turns out it is.

Of course, I worked yesterday, but it was calm because so many others take the day off. I could never justify trying to do the Black Friday thing, since so many discounts are on things I don't truly need, and if I really did want something, I'm not going to fight hundreds of silly people to do it. I really do hope the people who trampled the store worker to death get sent to prison, because there's no excuse for that type of abhorrent behavior. And it's a real shame that other's had the audacity to disrespect the deceased by thinking their shopping is more important than making sure authorities have proper clearance to investigate the death. I'm fairly certain the family will sue for damages, too, so those shoppers' urge to save $500 will end up costing them several thousand. Well played, tramplers.

The polling experience [Nov 4, 2008|18:50]

[Disposition | blah]

I arrived at my precinct about 10 minutes to 7, and there were about 25 people waiting outside already. This time around, they had us wait outside instead on in the hallway like they did four years ago, and we also filled out the applications closer to the city hall entrance instead of the actual voting room. It sounded to me like quite a few people there were voting for the first time, so take from that what you will. For the most part I voted a Republican ticket, with a few splits in some of the university board races. I also voted for Proposal 1 (medicinal marijuana) and against Proposal 2 (embryonic stem cells). But all in all, I'm not really that enthusiastic about the presidential race regardless of who wins, because as we well know, McCain would likely give in to some of the Democrats' ridiculous proposals, and it's utter chaos should Obama win and the Democrats maintain control of Congress. Is it too early to advocate a Romney-Palin (or Palin-Romney) ticket for 2012?

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox charged a former ACORN employee with forgery. The charges come after he allegedly falsely submitted registration applications between May 20 and June 6 in Jackson County. I do hope that this case gets to trial, because Antonio Johnson will likely have to spill the beans on ACORN's intentions.

Palin still loves us Michiganders! [Oct 3, 2008|17:39]
According to a Fox News interview, Sarah Palin was shocked(!) that McCain pulled out of Michigan. To me, this gives me more reason than ever to support her, since she's still willing to support us despite the campaign's decision. Palin is going to be a force for the Republicans, and it's because of stances such as this. I just wish she were on top of the ticket now.

This is just so disgustingly sick in so many ways. Only the moonbats would be so dumb as to think this a good thing.

Thank goodness the Cubs clinched all they could, as their loss tonight doesn't mean a whole lot. They should be able to snag 98 wins in Wrigley North (if Houston weren't practically done, then 100 was possible). Kudos also to the Twins for leaping over the White Sox. I'm thinking there'll be a makeup game Monday. :p

The Chase is on! New Hampshire liveblog [Sep 14, 2008|14:07]
[Tags|]
[Disposition | excited]

Hopefully my driver makes a great showing. I'm going to update this post from time-to-time with thoughts on the race. They're just now completing opening ceremonies. And with the Lions down 21-0, there's no point to switch to keep up on that.

John McCain spoke before the command to start engines (as he also addressed the drivers meeting earlier), but the command itself was given by a Sylvania suit.

14:30: Green flag's in the air! Kyle Busch leads the first lap. Carl Edwards leads lap 4! But Bowyer looks to be on the move. Gilliland makes a nice save on lap 14 after Reutimann got into him, or we might have had our first yellow. They're saying the 18 has a broken sway bar, so Kyle has to hang on until lap 35, when NASCAR will throw a competition yellow. Busch has lost 17 positions in 25 laps.

Lap 36 caution: Kyle Busch comes in early, but he'd likely restart at the tail end anyway. Edwards took two right-side tires and didn't lose a spot. Busch is back in the pits to diagnose and fix that earlier problem, but he'll restart two laps down. Joey Logano gets a pass-through for dragging equipment out of his pit box. Kyle Busch is shown running 43rd position and 10th in points thanks to his penalties. Now they're saying Busch is only the one lap down that he was penalized, as he got out before the field lapped him again. But since he was penalized, Busch has to race to get his lap back; he won't benefit from the lucky dog should he be the first a lap down.

On that last caution, Jeff Gordon lost a lot of spots because Robby Gordon made a sloppy stop in his pit. Carl is looking to put Kyle another lap down, and if he does, then Kyle will have had a bad day. Jimmie Johnson just took the lead about 70 laps in.

Caution, lap 83: Kyle Busch was involved in a wreck, so a bad day keeps getting worse for him.

After the restart, Earnhardt takes the lead so he can pick up five bonus points.

We're over halfway now, and lots of drivers are pitting early. With the rain here in Coldwater, methinks I'll have a pizza delivered. They just went through green flag pitstops, which means there's only one stop left. Greg Biffle takes the lead at lap 176. Pizza has been ordered and will be here in an hour, probably by the closing laps.

Ike's remnants are causing quite a bit of rain here today, even causing Portage police to issue an advisory for people to stay off the roads. Biffle, Johnson, Hamlin, Burton, and Edwards are top 5 with less than 90 to go. Caution just came out, so teams made what should be their final stops, and Johnson came out first.

Joe Nemechek blows a radiator and brings out a caution with 79 laps to go. Tony Stewart gets the free pass. Denny Hamlin pits from second position and will restart 18th, so not a good move for him. But then they've found out he had a cut tire, so actually a good move.

Matt Kenseth wrecked after Chad McCumbee got loose into him. NASCAR has red-flagged the race with 70 to go to clean up the frontstretch. That's what happens when you run five-wide at New Hampshire.

Caution out with 34 to go. That should give several drivers a little leeway to make it to the end on fuel. Some of the people in back on the lead lap come in to top off and change tires. The last 30 laps should be a real treat.

And Biffle wins it! He passed Johnson after the last restart, and he picks up his first win since last year's race at Kansas. Edwards takes the points lead, Johnson has an identical point total but is in second because of fewer wins. Biffle vaults to third in points, 30 points back. The chase is off to a great start, and to think we'll have nine more races which should be full of intense action.

I have a few questions:

1. If this guy really had an affair with Bristol Palin, how can he be absolutely sure the kid in the womb is his if, as he said himself, that it was within the relationship of Bristol and Levi? There would need to be a DNA test to confirm this.
2. The whole story seems suspect. If Sarah Palin had been elected governor in 2006, would Bristol still be in Wasilla at the particular timeframe he mentions?
3. Why aren't the Kosheads and other liberal degenerates on this? C'mon, it has all the things they would jump on. Nothing about this passes the smell test. But I don't expect it to be the lowest thing the opponents do to attack the Palins. Needless to say, I just hope that it is one lame joke, because that's how I perceive it.

Why do people think they can screw me? [Sep 7, 2008|22:34]

[Disposition | pissed off]

So Jeff, the owner of the Barking Frog, decides to run a promotion that for each Lion fumble recovery, regardless of whose fumble, there'd be a drink on the house for the whole bar. Well, it so happened that the Lions did recover their own fumble towards the end of the game, but the bartender decided to welsh on the promo. Considering the Lions sucked anyway, I suppose I shouldn't have gotten as mad as I did. But it just gets to me that one person can be so bold as to screw all the patrons in that bar at that time. But I do have an upper hand, because all the box scores will prove I'm right. That Lions fumble was the only one during the whole game, and they didn't lose it, so the house owes one round to everyone who was there at the time.

In other things, I see PokerStars isn't spreading the 8-game mixed at .25/.50 blinds like they did a while ago. Hopefully this is only temporary, as I kind of liked that level.

Something in the back of my mind wants to ask if McCain's running mate is any relation to Michael Palin. But for people not named Mitt, McCain made a decent choice. She also made a great speech, and I for one will greatly enjoy a victory by this ticket. Now it will be a speedy two months until Election Day. We're pretty much in the homestretch now.

It definitely will be with me on any trips I take, so maybe Flickr pics will be posted more quickly. Just so I would be sure to go through with it, I booked a motel room just inside the Illinois line for Friday night. I finally plan to hit the Horseshoe Hammond after several previous weekends have had familial obligations. Although I thought I might've gone this weekend, I ended up going up to the Whitecaps game Friday night, spent the night in Kentwood, and did some shopping Saturday. I then came down separately so I could spend the rest of Saturday with my brother at a dead Strike Zone before he was driven down toward Indy tonight.

Carl Edwards won at Michigan today, and my friends who went will definitely have to regale me in their experiences at the track. I'm also looking forward to knowing how Roxanne (a big Kyle Busch fan) took the result. :p One of these years, I'm going to have to get to a race.

Notes on yesterday's primary [Aug 6, 2008|17:24]

[Disposition | contemplative]

I was behind Greg Moore ever since he began his run for state representative, and I am thrilled that he has advanced to the general election, where he faces Kate Segal, who represents my district on the county commission. (Moore represents whichever district Athens is in.) Needless to say, this should be a close race given that both candidates are popular county commissioners. But Greg has the attitude needed to at least attempt to fix the mess up in Lansing. And considering he works as the term-limited Mike Nofs's aide, that could give him a little clout with some of Lansing's existing politicians. I look forward to my state House district being one of the most compelling because there are strong differences of opinion from fairly competent people.

I had wanted to go through my archives to recall when John Kerry chose his running mate during that election cycle, and it was on July 6 (reported in the morning papers July 7, obviously). Yet in this cycle, we're a whole month from that point, and neither presumptive nominee has yet chosen a running mate, which leads me to ask: what is the fucking holdup? Since Michigan just had its state primary, that means we're less than three months from the general. Was Kerry's pick made unusually early, or has the drawn-out Democratic race caused both nominees to just zone out and wait until nearly the last minute to pick? Of course, I'm not suggesting that Kerry be used as the bellwether for choosing the running mate, but it is odd that this race has gone this long without running mates.

Vegas photos are up [Jul 16, 2008|16:52]

[Disposition | amused]

I finally got my trip photos up on Flickr, after they wouldn't load there yesterday.

Overall, the trip was fun. I didn't lose as much as I'd expected, and I know I'll be back, particularly for the Mirage's 1-4 spread stud game. However, my favorite poker room this trip would have to be MGM Grand's, as it set so you can see plenty. I also was in the Amazon Room at the Rio during the World Series Main Event bubble, but the only celebrity-type that I could recognize was Norman Chad. I didn't have time to get over there again, but at least I can say I saw some of the WSOP in person, even though I couldn't see much. I can swear I only got four hours of sleep the whole trip. And Hooters Hotel already wants to give me a complimentary two-night stay before the end of this summer (courtesy of their rewards club). I know I do want to go back, and if the hotel is willing to pay for lodging, going back this summer is a slight possibility.

Under 12 hours now... [Jul 10, 2008|07:14]
[Disposition | excited]

My trip to Las Vegas is finally at hand! The drive down here to Indianapolis was pretty uneventful, but there was one numbnut who thought it wise to hold me up in the extreme left lane on I-465. I even flashed my lights twice, and he finally decided to move over as we were approaching I-65. It seems that some people still think it's okay to poke in the left lane, when really that person should've been in the middle or right lane. Granted, I could've passed on the right, but I feel that slower vehicles should be required to move over when there's sufficient room, which this guy had.

My brother is driving to Vegas from San Diego. Someday, I think I want to take that drive, as I'm sure it's a fun one.

It's hard to believe... [Jun 10, 2008|17:09]
[Tags|]

One month from today, I fly out to Las Vegas to celebrate my brother's birthday. There's so much to think about between then and now that it's so close, but I think I have a pretty good idea how I want to spend my time and money. At least Dad is springing for the room and rental car, and I booked my flight in January, so I'm good to go as far as lodging and travel is concerned. My stimulus should be to me by the time I leave, so that bit will help. I've been browsing different sites to see which poker room would be the best place to play a session. We'll be staying at the Hooters Hotel, but from what I've read so far, the poker room there leaves a bit to be desired. I know I'll be right across from the MGM Grand, and I'm certain I could probably head downtown if I decide the games might be better up there. I'm certain we'll head over to Hoover Dam together at some point, and Dad also plans to have a meal together for Adam's birthday. Somewhere between the time we land on July 10 and the time we depart on the evening of July 13, I'm sure I'll have time to myself. One thing I will not do is plop myself in front of a slot machine. I'll probably play a little blackjack, but I much prefer to play against other people than the casinos.

One thing about the time we're going is that it'll be just near the end of the Main Event to the World Series of Poker. I do believe at some point, I might like to catch a peek of what's going on, but I understand it's likely to be crowded. I do know that if I'm watching others play, that's time I know that I'm not actively losing my own money. I at least have to attempt to see some of the action, if only to tell people I saw some of the WSOP in person. There's just so much in Vegas that I can see why people go there repeatedly. Suffice it to say, Vegas can't be done in the weekend I'm there. But I'm going to make as much as is reasonable.

Perhaps some time this weekend, I might get over to the Ball Joint to play some poker, since I haven't been there in a while. I also want to at least pick up a Red Wings championship cap. If no one around here has the proper cap (i.e., the one that players wore on the ice), a trip over to Hockeytown Authentics may be in order. I figure if I head that way, I could hit up one of the Detroit casinos, but then I said I'd try to save some money for Vegas.

I know for a fact that I only have a little over $600 left on my car payments. I know that it'll be a relief to me (and my grandmother, since the loan had to be put in her name) once it is paid off. I figure I can keep the Kia around for at least a couple more years before I start thinking of something else, but I'm reluctant to go through the hassles of securing financing.

Stanley Cup, plus some Indy action [May 21, 2008|18:06]
[Tags|, ]

I know I haven't been nearly as excited about hockey this year, but then my excitement for just about everything has waned a little bit. I'm thinking the Wings will win in five, simply because Pittsburgh doesn't have the depth that the Wings do. It is rather unfortunate how it was scheduled (e.g., Game 1 on Versus goes against Game 3 of the Pistons' series on ABC). There's also the little matter of how the sports bars will control their chaos. Thank goodness the venues are pretty far apart.

I'm going to hope that West Columbia 7 still has tickets for the midnight showing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I had thought I would watch the first three in the past few days, but I hadn't made time for that. I sincerely hope that the action far outweighs the inside jokes about the 18-year span from the last film. Somehow, I foresee them using this film as a catalyst to make more films with Shia LaBeouf's character, but then that's totally predictable, right?

Again, I highly suggest that everyone check out Carrier on your local PBS stations. I'm already thinking of ordering the DVD.

When ESPN broadcast a two-hour show because the NFL schedule was released, you know things have gotten too ridiculous. We hear enough prognostication in the week leading up to the start of the season-to prognosticate now long before the rosters will be set is crazy talk. I'm willing to bet the four-letter network pushed the start of the draft to 3 pm instead of the usual noon start so they could air a 3-hour pre-draft show. Football is the most popular sport. Who the hell is left to attract with such utterly unnecessary programming? I suppose it has to be slightly better than reairings of trick pool shots or the WSOP.

April's off to an iffy start [Apr 9, 2008|18:27]
[Tags|]
[Disposition | contemplative]

It's hard to believe that we're in April already. I know many people who have birthdays in this month, and I managed to attend one person's so far, but I know that one which is coming up will wind up to be one that is most enjoyable for me. Somehow, I need to maintain what friendships I do have, yet try to break this curse I seem to have with the opposite sex. It's been over a year since I met Zoe, and still I can't seem to find a girl that had her passion. But passion can't be the only thing, as I need someone who is sincere, and unfortunately for me, sincerity is quite rare indeed amongst my circle of friends. I just need to find someone willing to listen long enough so I can tell them where I stand. It just frustrates me to no end that when I try to seriously speak my mind, either people are too busy to listen or they just dismiss it like it's nothing.

I know as a general rule life is supposed to have its ups and downs. But whenever I feel to have one of those so-called ups, it always feels so fake, so it's really a down. I just feel that at 27, I've been through lots of those artificial ups, so if a real up ever came, how would I be able to distinguish it? I can only do so much thinking on my own. But surely, I will have what I want, because I'm just as entitled as everyone else is. I guess I'll just keep trudging along like I always have, and one day I'll have my genuine ups.

Profitable evening [Mar 29, 2008|22:30]

I tagged along with Mom and Greg over to the American Legion post in Quincy where they held a reverse raffle. There were 200 tickets which cost $30 apiece, and one of mine won third place, which was worth $300. (Second paid $500, while the winner got a cool G. I had also won a $5 raffle [for a 1-in-6 chance] for another ticket which got knocked out.) Even if I hadn't gotten any money, it was still a fun evening, particularly hearing the banter between the party two tables from us and the woman drawing the tickets. Before the drawing, there was a Swiss steak dinner and an open bar, so the money spent was reasonable. I'd definitely consider going to one of those again.
